Yahya, the owner of Shawn michelle's, played baseball for south side little league in Chicago as a child. One day after practice there was an old lady with a bucket on a bench and she had cups of ice cream for $1. It was soft and distinctively different. While in school for his masters, he had the desire to recreate that moment from his childhood. Took 6 yrs to make it edible and desirable. After graduating, he came back to chicago and created the first flavor which was honey cinnamon graham cracker and continued to make ice cream. His love of culinary arts kept him making ice cream and selling to family and friends. He attracted goodwill and was blessed to learn more and open the first location on 79th & Langley in Chicago. Yahya rented rooms to make ice cream in and bought equipment to expand his brand, Jabril Supreme Cream. Feeling the weight of his sister’s death, he opened as Shawn Michelle’s Homemade ice cream on 95th, then the Blue Island community. There they began to attract media attention and the brand name grew. The location was small and they needed a bigger location. They launched the North side location. Shortly after the Bronzeville opening brought new opportunities. They went from Blue island to Broadway to Bronzeville. Now they have a space in the west loop, with the best of chicago and will be opening a new location in Olympia fields.
